Songs of Freedom is an innovative song-writing project set-up by PRS Music Foundation, Warren Records and Freedom Festival to commission unique collaborations between established Hull based artists to write, record and perform an album of contemporary protest songs.

Protest songs are statements of social, cultural, political, and economic discontentment. Throughout history they have been a catalyst for people to come together and raise their voices to convey ideas, challenge injustice and achieve change.

We asked artists to write new protest songs inspired by whatever issues they feel they want to express be it local, national or worldwide, and contribute a lasting legacy that embodies Freedom Festival’s prevailing theme of ‘celebrating through artistic and cultural expression the concept of freedom’. The album was produced by local people and released through Warren Records where young people are part of every step of the process. The release of this album will help raise the profile of the artists, show solidarity through music and create profits for future music engagement projects.

All tracks were produced and mixed by Ysabelle Wombwell at AOO Studios and Warren Studios. Additional production and mixing by Patrick Pretorius, Jody Moore and Daniel Spooner.
